For R Public House, a neighborhood restaurant bar in Chicago, IL, I chose to create a look that was warm, familiar, gently trendy and could easily accommodate menu changes. The owner was launching a menu themed to a north woods supper club and so we chose a retro look featuring fonts that are reminiscent of the 1940's and 1950's using bursts and sparkles to match the themes of the time. I decided to feature a photo which hangs on the wall of the restaurant, one which features the owners own grandparents eating in a supper club in the 50s in the style they hoped to emulate. I "hung" that on the menu to create a home-spun feel. I love to use as much local detailing as possible to match design to location. Instead of food photos which tend to look stark and generic, I chose stylized, hand painted, food portraits as a way to feature actual food items.
